Most likely, you weren’t alive as the 1960’s came to a close. if you were, you may remember the emergence of black lights and posters. Their emergence coincided with acid rock and psychedelic music. Like most fads, lots of folks jumped on the bandwagon and tried to make a few bucks. Eventually, non-black light posters were produced. From a sweaty, screaming Janis Joplin clutching a microphone, to a tie dyed explosion of color, to a deep philosophical expression……………..posters where everywhere. Pick up a couple, maybe some that would glow under the influence of a blacklight, hang on the wall, and BOOM………………instant self expression!
I wasn’t really a poster guy, but occasionally, one would capture my attention. My favorite all time poster was extremely simple. I was inspired by it’s message then, and I am inspired by it’s message now. The poster was simple by design. A basic, wooden, counter height, stool. A round seat, four legs and two short sentences. The sentences? “Sometimes, I sits and thinks”. “Sometimes, I just sits.”
Interesting, isn’t it, with more leisure time than ever in the history of man how we have lost the ability to do just that. Rather than take advantage of the free time, we use the time to vegetate in front of a screen hoping to be entertained. Very few can or will think for themselves.
If you are a thinker, I commend you. If you are not, it’s never too late to begin.
